After a particularly harsh winter, Lynchburg residents are undoubtedly ready to get outside and enjoy spring—and there is probably nothing more representative of a serene spring outing than a picnic. Local schoolteacher Danielle Sarchet created Hill City Picnics to help Lynchburg residents enjoy luxury, curated picnics for any occasion.

“Hill City Picnics officially began during the pandemic as a way to help people continue creating special memories in a safe and creative way,” Sarchet said.

Aside from seeing a need for the services Hill City Picnics provides to Lynchburg, Sarchet claims the business is much more personal to her than just filling a gap in the local market. “It was also important to me to build something my son and I could share. When he was younger, he would ‘protect’ the picnic setups with his toy sword, and now he helps with setting up and breaking down when he can,” Sarchet shared.

Each Hill City Picnics setup is tailored to the moment—designed for connection and celebration,.

Creating fun, engaging, and ultimately memorable events for her first-grade students helped to inform how Sarchet curates unique experiences for her customers. She says the flexibility in her schedule allows her to still devote plenty of time to her business. Fortunately, spring and summer breaks allow her to tap into Hill City Picnics’ best seasons of operation.

“Being a single mother, that extra income is important, but I also genuinely love what I do. My passion for teaching carries over into my business. Additionally, I offer setups for children’s sleepovers and movie nights, where my fun, creative, elementary teacher personality really shines,” Sarchet said.

Hill City Picnics offers a variety of packages with different amenities and price points that cater to different budgets and occasions. Her most popular packages are the “Golden Hour Glow,” which Sarchet describes as a “romantic escape,” and the “Sweet and Simple,” which is the most affordable “chic pop-up” that Hill City Picnics offers.

One aspect of Hill City Picnics is the curation of high-quality products and amenities for each setup. Sarchet partners with local businesses and Airbnbs to help bring her vision to life.

“No two setups are exactly the same. We work to tailor each experience to fit the occasion, whether it’s a romantic date, a celebration, or a gathering with friends and family,” Sarchet explained.

More than just fancy hors d’oeuvres, Hill City Picnics employs high-quality plating and personalized decor.

“I’m fortunate to collaborate with an amazing team of talented women who each bring their own expertise to the experience, including charcuterie specialists, balloon stylists, and retreat hosts,” Sarchet said.

Set against one of Lynchburg’s scenic overlooks, Hill City Picnics transforms familiar outdoor spaces into intimate, elevated experiences where thoughtful details and natural beauty meet.

Enjoying a Hill City Picnic is as simple as registering for your desired picnic package and just showing up, according to Sarchet, who aims to make the process as stress-free as possible.

“Hill City Picnics has been growing organically over the past few years, and the response from the community has been very positive. Everyone who has heard about the concept and booked a picnic has loved the experience and truly enjoyed the service,” Sarchet claimed.

The Bagel & I

When New York natives Andrew and Kim Mather moved to Central Virginia in 2013 to be closer to their adult son and daughter, they had no idea that they were one step closer to fulfilling a 40-year-old dream of owning their own business. On Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021, they opened the doors of the first New York–style bagel shop in Lynchburg—The Bagel & I.

“I think you have lofty dreams in college, and maybe somewhat unrealistic, however that’s okay,” Andrew Mather said. “I’m sixty [years old], so here we are 40 years later, and the dream has come to fruition.”

A few years after moving to Lynchburg, the Mathers spent a six-month period accompanying their youngest son on trips to Brooklyn, N.Y., where he received invasive health treatments. This required the family to stay in the city for a week at a time each month.

It was during one of these trips to New York that the idea for The Bagel & I was born.

“While [in New York], of course, we ate a lot of bagels,” Andrew Mather said. “I remember so specifically, I [was] on my knees praying and it just [hit me]. The Lord just [gave me the idea]… bagels.”

After several years of planning and brainstorming, the couple put their plan into action in December 2020, when Andrew Mather came across a listing for the building on Timberlake Road that was formerly Country Cookin restaurant. After having his initial offer turned down, he was able reach a lease agreement with the building’s new owners in April 2021 and got right to work on transforming the 5,000-square-foot space into a unique, multi-faceted bagel shop.

The Mathers enjoy the versatility the larger building provides, and their vision was to create a welcoming environment for all ages. The space includes a private conference room, relaxing fireplace room, booths, high-top tables, outdoor seating, a drive-through, and a “bagel process room” where guests can view how a traditional New York–style bagel is crafted.

The Bagel and I offers 14 bagel flavors—from everything to French toast to whole wheat.

Also on the menu are breakfast sandwiches and cold and warm lunch sandwich options that are named after parts of town (e.g. “The Timberlake”: an everything bagel with tomato, avocado, bacon, arugula, and red pepper schmear).

Despite having to push back the shop’s opening date due to delays in the shipping of their bagel equipment, the Mathers have remained confident and thankful for their new business.

“For [God] to work things out, He is the Grand Weaver,” Andrew Mather said. “What He did to make this [dream] come to fruition is absolutely amazing. Yet that is confirmation that He is in it. It’s His and not mine.”

La Vida Coffee + Market

By Christian Weaner

On a rainy evening in mid-May, Andrew Padilla gathered to brainstorm with a few of his friends in the empty building that would soon become the newest coffee shop in Lynchburg. As they sat together and talked, the ideas started to flow.

“We didn’t have a name, we didn’t have an aesthetic, we had no idea what we were going to do with the shop,” Padilla said. “And then, we all just sat down for a couple hours…came here one night when it was super rainy, we turned off all the lights except for the string lights, just kind of getting inspiration of what we want this place to be. That’s how La Vida was born.”

With the help of his team, Padilla opened La Vida Coffee + Market in July with a vision of becoming not only a successful coffee shop but also a safe haven that’s open to anyone, breathing life into the Lynchburg community.

Padilla, 21, is the co-owner of the business and a Sacramento, Calif., native who moved to Lynchburg in 2012 with his family. Many of Padilla’s ideas for La Vida are inspired by California-based coffee shops, which frequently host concerts, movie nights and other events.

The coffee shop is located inside a 4,000-square-foot building on the corner of Langhorne Road and Memorial Avenue. With the help of some friends, Padilla built all of the tables and sourced the other furniture.

He also ordered state-of-the-art coffee equipment that is unique to coffee shops in this area. They offer a fairly traditional coffee menu—from an Americano to a latte—but add in some seasonal favorites and offer Mexican sodas (Jarritos) as well.

Despite doing minimal marketing online and preparing for a soft launch to help get prepared for the return of college students, Padilla said he was blown away by the immediate turnout of customers when La Vida opened its doors July 17.

“All the tables, all the couches were filled,” Padilla said. “The line was going around the tables and out the door by 11 a.m. and we opened at 10 a.m.”

With large windows spanning the majority of the building, Padilla said he loves to let the natural light flood in, prop open the doors and create a welcoming environment for anyone who wants to stop by.

“Here at La Vida, anyone is welcome,” Padilla said. “No matter their age, no matter anything, we welcome everybody with open arms no matter what.”
