The Old Ball Game

Built in 1939, Bank of the James stadium is the fifth oldest ballpark in all of minor league baseball. Formerly called City Stadium, the name changed in 2020 when the city entered an agreement with Bank of the James. The field itself is named after Calvin F. Falwell, the man who brought Carolina League Baseball to Lynchburg in 1966 when he formed and became president of the Lynchburg Baseball Corporation.

The Hillcats home opener is Tuesday, April 12. The season will continue through Labor Day weekend.

Singing in the Rain

One of photographer Brianne Friberg’s favorite backdrops is Downtown Lynchburg. “I love the varied architecture and unique photo opportunities it provides,”
she explains.

Last year, as part of a weekly photo challenge group called 52Frames, she recruited two friends—dancers Adell Ehrhorn and Ronnie Brady—to run around downtown and create a few magical dance shots. “We had to wait out a brief, but strong, rain storm, which allowed for a perfect ‘Singing in the Rain’ vibe with the wet sidewalks,” she says.

Downtown Lynchburg

Imagine waking up and sipping your morning coffee while taking in this picturesque view of downtown Lynchburg.
The Krise on Ninth Street was built in 1907 as the city’s first skyscraper. After renovation and restoration work, the impressive architectural building has been converted into luxury loft-style apartments.
